You'd better love doing it. Because if you don't you won't last long in the business. Those are the sentiments of classic auto restorer Richard
Wolf who manages Beaches Auto Refinishing.

beachs auto refinishing restoration restore franklin nc north carolina"If you don't have the passion it just doesn't turn out the way it ought to be," Wolf said. "We live these old cars."

In its 30th year in the business, Wolf said this month marks the anniversary of business founder Leroy Beach's passing. Wolf runs the shop for Beach's daughter Anita who still owns the shop and keeps the books. Rob Huscusson also helps bring tired old masterpieces back to their original glory.

Cars from all over the country and even the world find their way to the shop on Belleview Road. In a modest setting behind an old house Wolf and Huscusson work their magic - turning rust and dilapidation into shiny, gorgeous works of automotive art.
Packards, Aston Martins, Porsches, Ferraris and Rolls Royces have undergone rejuvenation at the shop. Multitudes of Detroit iron in the form of muscle cars, trucks, Desotos and Hudsons have also had new life breathed into them.

"We're not stuck in any one breed," Wolf said. "We don't shy away from anything."

The shop's reputation precedes itself. So much so, cars just sometimes show up at the door. For instance, Wolf said once a man shipped a 1938 Hudson from Utah to them."We'd never met him. He called and asked about Hudsons," he said. "Then it just showed up here
one day.""It's a word of mouth thing," Wolf said.

While many parts makers have begun making original equipment parts for classics, many cars Wolf and Huscusson get are so old that parts
can't even be found for them. That's when the fun begins and the guys start from scratch with metal, fiberglass or plastic.

"We fabricate unimaginable things," Wolf said.

Currently, Wolf and Huscusson are working on several projects, most interesting, a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Indianapolis pace car. Also, a rare
1958 Chevy four-wheel-drive truck is almost complete.

Wolf said Beach cut his teeth and got his education in auto bodywork in Pontiac, Mich.,, where he worked for Fisher Body Corporation, a division
of General Motors. The company made bodies for General Motor's automobiles."He was a walking history book," Wolf said. "I miss him every
day."

Huscusson has worked for the shop for 15 years. Wolf said he first met Beach when he was invited to the Beach home for one the many Friday
night music sessions where Beach and others would make music.

Wolf, a mechanic from Florida came to Macon County and worked in construction. After meeting Beach, he said a friendship eventually turned
into a working relationship. He's been with the shop for 12 years now.

"He built this reputation and now that reputation's ours," Wolf said. "And we're gonna keep it going."

As evidence of a love and passion for cars, Wolf owns a classic Chevy, his wife Cathi has a '66 Mustang and their daughter Caitlyn drives a
restored 72' Chevy Nova to school everyday. Huscusson also has classic autos as well as Beach's daughter Anita.

As for unique automobiles, the shop has done an 1964 Aston Martin DB5, like the one driven by Ian Flemming's James Bond character in the
007 films.

Probably most rare are the Muntz cars, named after Earl "Madman" Muntz who sold cars and electronics. His television commercials spawned a
whole generation of pitchmen yelling and screaming on TV selling a multitude of different wares. Muntz later bought the fledgling Kurtis Kraft
company and tried his hand at making cars. After very few Muntz sports cars were produced, the company went out of business. Muntz had
four cut down and made into roadsters. Today, Wolf says only those four Muntz cars exist today. Beach's Auto Refinishing has restored two
of them.

"And they're on their way with another," Wolf said.

At the end of the day, Wolf says it's about doing your best work and making friends because of it. "Most of our customers keep coming back
to us," Wolf said.
